1. What Sail Academy is
Sail Academy is an online theory course that teaches the topics in the RYA Day Skipper theory syllabus: lessons, narrated films, quizzes, a mock exam and boat-handling simulators.
We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). We are not an RYA recognised training centre and we do not issue RYA certificates. To get the RYA Day Skipper theory certificate, take the course or assessment with an RYA recognised training centre.
2. Theory only: stay safe
The course teaches theory. It is not a substitute for practical training on the water with a qualified instructor, for up-to-date official charts, almanacs and notices to mariners, or for your own judgement as skipper. The simulators are simplified teaching models, not a prediction of how any real boat will behave. Never navigate with our practice chart: it shows a fictional coast.
3. Your account
You sign in with a passkey or a one-time email link. Keep your email account and devices secure; anything done while signed in to your account is treated as done by you. An account is for one person.
4. Plans and payment
The free tier is free. A paid plan (monthly or yearly) opens the whole course. Plans renew automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from your account page; the plan stays open to the end of the period you've paid for and is not charged again. Prices include VAT where it applies. Payments are processed by Stripe. If a renewal payment fails we will try again, and access ends if it cannot be collected.
We may change prices for future periods. We will email you at least 30 days before a change affects your plan, and you can cancel before it does.
5. Cancelling and refunds
See our refund policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: you have 14 days to cancel a new plan for a full refund, unless you asked for access to start straight away and have started using the course.
6. Our content: no redistribution
The lessons, films, diagrams, practice chart, questions, simulators and code are our work and are protected by copyright. Your plan gives you a personal, non-transferable licence to use them for your own learning while your plan is active. You must not copy, download in bulk, record, scrape, share your account, or republish or sell any of the content, or help anyone else do so. Films and diagrams carry a mark identifying the account that viewed them.
We monitor for automated or bulk access. If an account breaches this section we may suspend or close it without refund, and we may take action against the copying.
7. Takedown
If you find our content published elsewhere, or you believe something on Sail Academy infringes your rights, email help@sailacademyonline.com with the address of the page, what it copies and your contact details. We reply within five working days and remove infringing material promptly.
8. Availability and changes
We aim to keep the site available but can't promise it will never be interrupted. We keep improving the course and may change, add or remove lessons; if we remove a substantial part of what you paid for, you can cancel and we will refund the unused part of the period.
9. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your statutory rights as a consumer. Otherwise our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for losses arising from how you use the theory on the water.
10. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
